APEX 4.0.1 Patch released
4
Dimitri Gielis 18-AUG-2010 18:28

Hi just read Joel Kallman's post that the Oracle Application Express (APEX) team released 4.0.1 which corrects a number of issues found in APEX 4.0.

I recommend going to 4.0.1 if you have 4.0 installed as soon as possible.

If you still have 3.x running and want to upgrade to 4.0 you can directly download the 4.0.1 release and install that.

The new version of APEX is 4.0.1.00.03.

Application Express 4.0.1 released
4
Joel Kallman 18-AUG-2010 10:00

Today, Oracle Application Express 4.0.1 was released. This corrects a number of issues discovered in the original Application Express 4.0 release. In the README of the Application Express 4.0.1 patch set, there is a listing of all of the bugs corrected in this patch set. You can view a copy of it here.

We have also repackaged the Oracle Application Express full distribution. If you have never installed or upgraded to Oracle Application Express 4.0, you can download the latest full distribution and install this and you'll have Application Express 4.0.1 out-of-the-box. Since this always creates confusion for customers (do you need the patch set or the full distribution?), use this guide:

  1. If you have Oracle Application Express release 4.0 installed, download the Oracle Application Express 4.0.1 patch set from My Oracle Support and apply it. Look for patch number 9976149. Even though the file is named p9976149_11201_GENERIC.zip, seemingly only for DB 11.2.0.1, it can actually be used against any supported database version running Application Express 4.0.

  2. If you have Oracle Application Express release 3.2.1 or earlier installed (including Oracle HTML DB release 1.5), download and install the entire Oracle Application Express 4.0.1 release from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

  3. If you do not have Oracle Application Express installed, download and install the entire Oracle Application Express 4.0.1 release from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

And how do you determine what version you're running? Well, if you're a DBA, you can connect to the database as SYS using SQL*Plus and issue:

select version from sys.dba_registry where comp_id = 'APEX';
If you can login to the Application Express development environment, you'll see the version number in the lower right of every page.

Oracle Application Express at http://apex.oracle.com had the 4.0.1.00.03 patch set applied on Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Insync 2010 - I wasn't there.

Scott Wesley 18-AUG-2010 09:52

Hello everyone

I'm starting to see a bit of feedback from the Insync Conference 2010 in Melbourne Australia.

It seems Down Under we're still working on creating the conference vibe, but I'm impressed to find a dedicated (yet thin) blog for the Melbourne leg. Here I found interviews with Connor McDonald & Tom Kyte.
I'll note that video of Connor confirms that I'm not the only one that seems to associate alcohol consumption with Oracle. I noted in the latest AUSOUG Foresight Magazine, Marc Lancaster gave a warm review of my appearance at a Brisbane branch meeting - apparently I commented how wonderful the beer & pizza concept is, or something along those lines!

Congratulations to Jeff Kemp, who took out Steven's live PL/SQL Challenge.
http://feuerthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/08/plsql-challenge-live-event-in-melbourne.html
I was looking forward to the live challenge this Friday when Steven comes to Perth, but alas - I have a previous date with our wonderful coastal isle - Rottnest.

Next time, Kempy... next time ;-)

I do look forward to catching up with friends this year at the Perth's leg of the conference series in November, perhaps I'll see you there.

All Programmers Should Read Delightfully Creative Information
4
Scott Wesley 17-AUG-2010 17:51

Now if you think that post title was a little strange, it's because it's a mnemonic.

Now they haven't really worked for me in the past - just like the poem to remember how many days in each month - I found it easier to remember the raw facts than the poem itself. Besides, the knuckle trick was easier.

Anyhow, this is an Oracle related blog, and I wanted to share an idea to remember the Apex URL syntax of:
f?p=App:Page:Session:Request:Debug:ClearCache:itemNames:itemValues:PrinterFriendly

Most of the time I remember the order fairly well off the top of my head, though sometimes I need to double check; and sometimes within the mix of a bunch of colons it's hard to work out what is what. Perhaps if you're reading a sentence in your head as you move the cursor between colons...
f?p=MY_APP:HOME::::::

So maybe what I (and others) need is a mnemonic to help us remember the order:

AllApplication
ProgrammersPage
Should Session
Read Request
Delightfully Debug
Creative Cache
Information Items
Values
Printer Friendly

I didn't include the last two, since you don't often need to consider the printer friendly attribute and once you have items, you should know values follow. Besides, I tried not to make it too complicated or difficult to remember!

What do you think? Any other suggestions? This really was the first thing that rattled off my head after a productive day of Apexing.

Yup, I also felt like inventing a new verb.

Ineffective Advertising
4
Bradley Brown 15-AUG-2010 23:54

I've been writing (Facebooking primarily) about development for the Android platform for the last few months now.  I solicited ideas from friends and family.  My sales went from $3-5/day up to $30-50/day and now up to around $70-100/day.  As one would expect, some of my apps sell better than others.  As you can see in other posts, some people feel I'm spamming the market.  People who buy the app seem to love it based on the feedback I get.  I have over 100 variations of 2 primary applications.  One application shows local events (i.e. music, culinary, etc.) and the other shows local favorite places (i.e. sushi, home improvement, etc).  I've experimented with a number of things including pricing.  I've priced from free (which gets a LOT of downloads, but I can't figure out a way to make that of value to me) to $.99, $1.99 and $2.99.  Over the past many weeks I reduced most of my apps to $.99, so that I could get a benchmark at $.99.  This week I've raised some of my prices to $1.99.  Next week I'm going to raise them to $2.99.  It's like playing the lemonade game.  I'm trying to determine the price where I sell the most (i.e. net sales - sales less cancellations).

This past week I experimented with Admob.  Admob was purchased by Google a while back.  Therefore I assumed it must be the premier mobile advertising provider.  However...I was wrong!  I experimented (similar to this experiment) by spending $100 on advertising.  My ad ended up running for about an hour - you can spend a WHOLE bunch of money in a day!!!!  I spent $.05 per who knows what...they just ask how much you want to bid, but they don't really explain the pricing - is it per click through?  Per impression?  What?

It took me days to get my account set up.  The site is one of the worst I've worked with.  When I finally got my account and ad set up, it said it was waiting for approval.  It took me a while to figure out if I needed to approve the ad - or them.  It's them who has to approve.  I waited 3 days for them to approve a simple ad that read "Local Events - View Events in area" and linked to my app.  You only get 30 characters in your ad.  After 3 days, they said my ad was declined and gave a very cryptic explanation - so I reached out to support, who got back to me a couple days later.  They said it was a clerical error that my ad was now approved.  By the time I got to their site, I had already spent $50!  So I upped my limit to $100 for the day...yet the stats didn't update.  It says on their site that the stats are 90 minutes behind.  So I waited 90 minutes, then 180 minutes...then...sometime later the stats finally appeared!

During the time that my ad ran, my assumption was that I would sell 0 copies of my app.  I ended up selling 3 copies of my app.  That's $3 in gross revenue or $2.10 in net revenue.  I spent $100 to get a return of $2.10!!!!  Not a great return on my investment.  In other words, this is ineffective advertising!

They said I received 356,555 impressions.  That's a LOT of apps that displayed my ad!  They said I received 1,833 click throughs.  1,833 people reading about my app is pretty good success...yet only 3 people purchased it.  Holy smokes that's terrible ROI.

So the bottom line - this isn't a method I can recommend to drive business to your apps!

I also tried making money by selling advertising for Admob within my app.  This is completely ineffective as I've made $.01 (and they have made a whole lot more) from my free "sales."  I would have made MANY times this amount my selling my app.  Even if I sold only one copy, I would have made 100 times my Admob ROI.

So...back to the drawing board!  If you have any ideas about how to sell more apps, please pass them on!!!

Scott Spendolini 15-AUG-2010 08:31

As per Patrick Wolf, apex.oracle.com has been upgraded to 4.0.1, fixing all of the known issues listed here.

Thus, we can conclude that it won't be long before the 4.0.1 patchset is available to the general public.
